February 17 – Geography Field Trip!

This week we will be visiting the BYU MOA to see their awesome French Posters exhibit! Please be at class right at 1 PM to turn in homework and pile into our vans. We will be leaving at 1:05 PM sharp. Please bring a phone (with cell reception and a camera) if you have one!

Homework due for this class period:

  1. Read Korea/Japan chapter of Prisoners of Geography. After reading, write a funny dialogue between North and South Korea, who have very distinctive personalities. For a sample, here is a recent video clip from North Korea. Here is a popular video from South Korea.

2. Start Reading A Woman in the Polar Night. We will be discussing it March 10th. This book may be challenging reading for you so I recommend you start now.

3. Watch Most Dangerous Ways to School Himalaya https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEJpkEctSEA

4. Don’t forget to practice for our next quiz at Seterra!

Depth Learning:

Very few people have been allowed in to North Korea and to witness what life is actually like there. “Under the Sun”, a Russian documentary about real life in North Korea, available at the library or on YouTube. Before you watch this movie, I recommend doing a little basic background research on conditions in communist North Korea (ask your parents for recommendations on sources they feel appropriate) and read the Wikipedia article about this documentary.

For a hilarious take, try watching the first episode of Crash Landing On You, a fun, cheesy Korean drama about the differences between North and South Korea. There are a few minor swear words in this episode.

A few tidbits from class last week:

Here is the promised video of Cambodian Apsara Dance

Watch Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon – a beautiful classic Chinese film. This movie is rated PG-13 so please consult with your parents before watching.

The Rescue is a documentary about the real-life rescue of a Thai soccer team from a flooded cave. Available on Disney+. Be aware this story is VERY intense! Amazing!

Check out the Thai water festival!

Prepare your passport by gluing in the materials provided for you. Designate one section for geography and one for science. Mark landforms on your map and glue it into your geography section of your passport. Record what you’ve learned about latitude/longitude, and the GPS system. Study where the countries are on your North/Central American map in preparation for the quiz. Record any other interesting things you learn from your reading or documentary this week. Writing down or illustrating what you’ve learned helps you process and organize what you’ve learned, and moves your learning from short-term memory into long-term memory.

Print and fill out checklist to turn in.

Note from Sis. Stanfill: Jed requested that we have MORE homework, because he loves science. So I have added a few extra fun things to watch and learn about this week. Please do not feel like you have to do every one of these options. BUT if you’re easily getting through the regular homework and want more… DIG IN! (Get it?)

Cultural Enrichment

Navajo Frybread

4 cups flour

2 tablespoons powdered milk

1 tables baking powder

1 ½ cup warm water

1 teaspoon salt

Crisco/shortening or oil for frying

Add baking powder, powdered milk and salt to the flour. Mix together. Add the water to form dough. Knead dough until soft, but not sticky or hard (add flour as needed). Cover with a cloth and allow to stand for about 15 minutes.

Shape dough into 20 balls, then flatten, stretching the dough with hand and fingers until the dough is flat and round. It may be rolled out with a rolling pin. Melt the shortening about 1 inch deep in a frying pan. Fry the dough on one side until golden brown, then turn and finish frying.

Native American TV

FNXFirst Nations Experience channel presents Native American stories and content to create a diverse and entertaining channel across all media platforms 24/7. The unique non-profit channel is the result of a shared vision and values between the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and PBS/KVCR both located in San Bernardino, California. I am not familiar with all of the content but what I have seen on this channel has been informative and fun. Here is a link to this week’s television programming if you are interested in watching Native TV. In Utah, you can find this television station on UEN channel 9.3 or at the website linked above.
