Finish reading your Asia book for our discussion today. MS: Here is the Heart of a Samurai study guide.

Watch Crash Landing on You episode 2. This is the Stanfill’s FAVORITE SHOW EVER! What you need to know: A wealthy but miserable South Korean businesswoman, Seri, is accidentally swept over the border into North Korea while paragliding. She lands in the Demilitarized Zone where she meets a group of North Korean border guards. She escapes the DMZ, but gets confused and finds herself hiding in a North Korean village near the border. (I can only assign one episode but… you should watch the whole show because it’s awesome! You will learn so much about North and South Korea, and you will have a blast doing it!) As always, consult your parents to make sure this show is a fit for you. If not, just note it on your homework. (If you need access to Netflix, let Sis. Stanfill know and she will hook you up.)

Watch one of Sis. Stanfill’s all-time favorite movies – Rab Ne Bana di Jodi. This Bollywood musical is a blast to watch, it is rated PG and there are a few swear words in English. As always, have your parents check it out and make sure it’s a fit for you.

OR you can watch this beautiful and very fun Japanese animated movie – Ponyo. This movie is rated G, so probably ok but check with your parents just in case.

OR you could watch BOTH and tell your mom that Sis. Stanfill said it’s HOMEWORK!

High School

Watch this video about life in North Korea. It contains some upsetting realities, life is terrible there. If you don’t feel comfortable reading about it, you can stop the video at any time.  Sometimes it’s worth understanding how different and hard life can be in other places to help us treasure the freedom and safety we have here in the USA.

Listen to the first two episodes of The Prince podcast. This podcast tells the life story of Xi Jing Ping, the president of China. Along the way, you will learn about the history of modern China and learn more about issues and events in China today. Each episode is about 1/2 hour long. You can do it!

To access The Prince, see our Slack channel for instructions!

Watch The Rescue, a documentary about a recent cave rescue in Thailand! This video is rated TV-14, but Commonsense Media rates it as 11+. It has three swear words. Talk to your parents and decide if it is a good fit for you. If you choose not to watch it, just note that on your homework.

• Find an interesting historical, cultural, or geographical video about South America and share it on Slack. Watch three of your fellow students’ videos.
• Finish Butterfly Hill or Neruda poetry (and the Neruda study guide)
• Finish your map we started in class. Here is a printable master to copy.
• Finish checkoff sheets. Here is this week. Turn in all your homework this week and Sis. Hodges has a cool prize for you!
• OPTIONAL: Bring an international food to share for our last week of class! Label it with the country and we will have a little feast!

Our whole family watched it and loved it, and Common Sense media has it rated for 8+. Talk to your parents to see if it’s a good fit for you! If not, just note that on your homework and you’ll get full credit.

• FOR OUR CRAFT THIS WEEK BRING TO CLASS:
• A small printed picture (no bigger than 2″ square) of one of your ancestors, preferably one that you knew personally or know a lot about. But any ancestor will do. Cardstock would be ideal but regular printer paper is fine.
• If you have an altoids/mints tin, small jewelry box, or other small container to class for a craft, bring it!
• Any small decorative items you might have laying around the house: buttons, beads, silk flowers, ribbon, colorful paper scraps, lace, Washi tape, etc.
